2017 Purple Martin Banding….Another Success!
Update:
On Friday, July 21st….
we set up to Band the remaining Purple Martins that were too young to Band on Saturday, July 8th. The result was 14 additional Birds. This brings our total to 149 young Purple Martins Banded for 2017!
This is the 10th year for the Program with a total of 921 Birds being Banded.
All the Birds will leave sometime in August on their trip to Brazil. After their departure the nesting house will be taken down and cleaned out. They will be stored in the PARCO building for the winter and placed back up before the return of the Purple Martins in the Spring.
A note from our Veteran Bird Bander:
All,
We have a total of 36 gords that can be used as nesting boxes by the Birds. This year all were used (34) except 2. We Banded 135 pre flight baby Purple Martins. There were 16 Birds that were to young to Band so we will go back in 10 days or so and pick them up giving us a total of 151 for this years project.
Many thanks to all who helped and all who came out to enjoy the bird banding!
Yours truly,
Gerry Farrell
